Christian Matyrs
Christian Matyrs were people who died for their faith. They were persecuted in often gruesome ways for what they believed in. Persecution is the bad treatment of someone because of their beliefs, race or culture.
Some common methods of persecution used when Paul was alive are crucifixion, being burnt alive and being attacked by dogs.
Early Christians were persecuted because their beliefs did not conform with the people who governed them. Saint Paul and the early Christians lived in the time when the Roman Empire was governing most of the known world. The Roman leaders worshiped the Roman Gods and so early Christians did not conform to this belief. In 64 AD Emperor Nero believed that the fire that burnt much of Rome was the Christians fault. This caused him to persecute many Christians. This happened around the time that St Peter and St Paul were killed.
