Saint Paul And His Symbol
Saint Paul was an Apostle whose original name was Saul of Tarsus. He lived and preached the word of the Gospel and became one of the most influential characters in the Christian faith.
Saul was born in Tarsus. He was a man who disliked Christians. Paul said that before his conversion to Christianity he was a persecutor, a blasphemer, an unbeliever, the chief of sinners. He even took part in the stoning of Saint Steven who was the first Christian Martyr. These are all practices that are considered highly unchristian.
Saul was on his way to Damascus to persecute some Christians when a bright light shone around him and demanded why he persecuted Christians. Saul then asked who was speaking and the voice said that it was Jesus. Saul then asked what he had to do and was told to go to Damascus. Saul had been blinded by the bright light so the people accompanying him led him into the city where he proceeded to pray for three days. God told the disciple Ananias to go and relive Saul's blindness and assured him that Saul was going to go and spread God's name and teachings to the Gentiles, the Kings and children in Israel. Ananias then went and put his hands on Saul saying that he had been sent by Jesus. Saul was then baptized and became Paul.
After this Paul started spreading the word of Jesus. He wrote many letters and traveled to many places including Corinth, Ephesus and Rome. He traveled to so many places to try and convince people to become christian and follow Jesus. To help with this process he also wrote many letter to communities including the Galatians, Thessalonians, Ephesians and the Romans.
In about the year 48 AD there was a meeting held called the council of Jerusalem. This meeting was to decide whether men converting to Christianity had to be circumcised and had to change their diet. Paul's opinion was that men didn't have to be circumcised in order to follow Jesus and that anyone could do it.
It is not completely clear how Paul died however we do know that he was a Christian Matyr. This means that he died for his faith. It is very likely that he was beheaded in Rome under the Emperor Nero. He was probably killed between 64 and 68 AD. It is believed that St Paul's remains are buried underneath the altar in St Paul's Basilica which is in Rome however this is not certain because he died such a long time ago.
The symbol I have made for St Paul is a shield with the words "Saint Paul" and a book on it. The book is symbolic of all the letters that he wrote and how they now make up a significant portion of the Bible which is the most bought book in the world.
